England failed to win the World Cup qualifier against Hungary. Remitted at Wembley the Three Lions with 1-1, which means that England now leads Group I with twenty points from eight matches. The other match in the group, between number two Albania and number three Poland, was interrupted at a 0-1 score. After Poland took the lead thirteen minutes before the end via Karol Swiderski, objects were thrown from the stands at the partying players, after which referee Clément Turpin stopped the game.

The match was marred by disturbances in the stands. Boos sounded from the box with about eight hundred fans from Hungary after the players of England knelt before the start of the game. The Hungarian fans also displayed a banner stating that they are not in favor of kneeling before the games. The English public responded by applauding the players’ gesture and using chants to call the Hungarians racists. Shortly afterwards, riots broke out in the stands, after which the police restored order in the stands after a few minutes.

Hungary needed a win at Wembley to keep their World Cup hopes alive and took the lead midway through the first half. The team of national coach Marco Rossi received a penalty when Luke Shaw shot the ball with a high leg in front of the head of Loïc Nego. The penalty was convincingly used by Roland Sallai, who aimed low into the left corner. England could not be satisfied with their own game, but came alongside eight minutes before half-time. After a spiraling free kick by Phil Foden, Tyrone Mings headed the ball through, after which John Stones reacted attentively: 1-1.

In the stoppage time of the first half, Raheem Sterling missed a great chance at 2-1, leaving Hungary with the prospect of a victory. After the break, most of the chances for the third goal of the game were again for England. Goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi turned a bet from Harry Kane and saw a Stones header wide. Seventeen minutes before the end, a powder from Kane also flew wide at close range. The four-minute stoppage time offered no solace for the team of national coach Gareth Southgate.
