Gonzalo Higuaín is putting an end to his football career after the current season in the MLS. The Argentinian announced this at a press conference at his club Inter Miami. The 34-year-old Higuain is best known for his periods with Real Madrid and Napoli and he also reached the final of the World Cup in 2014. The striker could not contain his emotions.

“I’m going to read you something I’ve written these days about my career and want to share it with you and the viewers,” the emotional Higuaín addressed the journalists present in the press room. “Good afternoon everyone, today I want to tell you my story. The time has come to tell you the news that I have been thinking and analyzing for a while. That prepared me for this decision. The day has come when I say goodbye to football. A profession that has given me so much, in which I have always felt privileged to have been able to practice it. With the good and less good moments.”

“It all started when I was very small,” he continues. “Playing in my neighbourhood, at school and at Club Atlético Palermo, for which I am eternally grateful because they gave me a great childhood,” Higuain refers to the club from his youth. “Where I met great people. Both trainers and players of my generation from 1987. There I experienced unforgettable moments that I cherish. They are family and friends to me that I love very much because I grew up with them and experienced unforgettable moments,” Higuaín said.

The attacker ended up in professional football with the Argentine top club River Plate, after which he moved to Europe in 2006 to play for Real Madrid. There, the striker made 190 games, in which he scored no fewer than 107 goals, delivered 45 assists and became champion of Spain three times. He then left for Napoli, where he also became a feared striker in Serie A. Juventus then bought Higuain in 2016, which was not appreciated by Napoli fans. After a loan period at Chelsea, he returned to Turin, where the 75-time international (31 goals) would remain until the summer of 2020. The then 32-year-old striker moved to Inter Miami in the MLS in the fall of his career.
