Mayor Ahmed Marcouch van Arnhem announced an emergency ordinance in his city on Tuesday for fear of riots between supporters of FC Twente, NEC and Vitesse, various media report. The reason for the possible confrontation is an announced corona demonstration by the organization ‘Weg met dit Kabinet’. The emergency ordinance should make it easier for local authorities to intervene when things threaten to go wrong.
The municipality of Arnhem has given the aforementioned organization strict conditions that the demonstration must meet. For example, a maximum of five hundred demonstrators are welcome and it is only allowed to demonstrate on the Market. In addition, the organizing party is expected to monitor order itself and that all imposed corona measures are strictly adhered to. Only then can the demonstration be held in a safe manner. However, reports on the social media indicate that safety is already at risk before the start of the demonstration.
Supporters of FC Twente and NEC have used the demonstration for a confrontation with supporters of Vitesse, according to signals received on the internet. Moreover, a large number of so-called Defend groups have indicated that they want to come to Arnhem. In the past, these groups caused more unrest during corona demonstrations, including on the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Due to the emergency ordinance, the police have the option to check vehicles at approach roads to the city and to refuse access to the city if necessary.
“Demonstration is a fundamental right and it is our duty to facilitate this in a safe way by designating a suitable place and making agreements with the organization,” Marcouch tells.
