Atalanta have achieved an important victory in Serie A. The team of trainer Gian Piero Gasperini was 1-0 too strong for Fiorentina at home thanks to a goal by Ademola Lookman. Marten de Roon, Hans Hateboer and Teun Koopmeiners, who recovered from a head injury, were in the starting line-up at Atalanta. Just like leader Napoli, Atalanta now has twenty points, while Fiorentina has to make do with eleventh place.

Luis Muriel was the first to become dangerous on behalf of the home side. The striker’s attempt flew just wide of the left post. Fiorentina countered that with chances from Riccardo Saponara and Jonathan Ikoné, without becoming very dangerous. After 25 minutes of play, Koopmeiners got the chance to put his team ahead. However, the midfielder’s shot in the box could be stopped by Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano. Christian Kouamé of Fiorentina made a foul before half-time that resulted in Massimiliano Irrati being sent to the screen by VAR. The arbiter ultimately decided not to give the Ivorian a card.

After an hour, Atalanta took the lead. A clever throw-in from Koopmeiners found Luis Muriel at the back line. The Colombian then squeezed past Lucas Martínez Quarta, among others, and gave Lookman an unmissable pass: 1-0. Joakim Mæhle got the chance to make it 2-0 after a failed offside fall with the visitors, but the wing defender placed the ball in Terracciano’s arms. Sofyan Amrabat was then brought into the squad at Fiorentina, but he too was unable to turn the tide. From a counter, Lookman should have taken care of his second of the afternoon. On a pass from the star Koopmeiners, the Nigerian had the 2-0 on his shoe, but he decided to cut one too many. An attempt by Luka Jovic in the final phase was cleverly turned by Marco Sportiello. It was no surprise that Atalanta’s goalkeeper kept the ‘zero’. The Bergamo side have conceded just three goals in Serie A this season, which is the fewest in Serie A.
