The hundreds of signatures that the VVCS has collected in the past period will be presented on Thursday morning at 10.30 am by Gijs de Jong, secretary general of the KNVB, to VVCS chairman Evgeniy Levchenko. The football association is in any case pleased with the involvement of the players’ union and its members and the support for the ‘Football supports Change’ campaign of the Dutch national team. De Jong will urge FIFA on behalf of the KNVB to take the protest action seriously, the VVCS reports. The petition is also supported by human rights organization Amnesty International Netherlands.
The VVCS further writes in the statement that the football associations in Norway and Australia also want to set up such an action and that this will soon be discussed with the FIFPro. Prior to the World Cup qualifying matches with Latvia (2-0) and Gibraltar (0-7), the players of the Dutch wore undershirts with the text ‘Football supports Change’, in order to draw attention to the circumstances of migrant workers in Qatar.
