Club Brugge has run into a defeat in the Pro League. Despite a goal by Bas Dost, the number three in Belgium lost 2-1 to KV Mechelen and is therefore four points behind leader Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the PhD student who has played one game less. Club also had a bad dress rehearsal for Wednesday’s Champions League match against RB Leipzig. Noa Lang participated for 79 minutes and was virtually invisible; Ruud Vormer played the first half. At Mechelen, Lucas Bijker and Sandy Walsh participated for ninety minutes.

Dost scored five goals in his previous three games as a starting player and thus regained the confidence of coach Philippe Clement. The striker showed himself in the final phase of the first half. He forced goalkeeper Gaëtan Coucke to save and also gave Vormer an opportunity to open the score. The game was devoid of goals in the first half, but Club took the lead after the break. Hans Vanaken found Coucke in his path with a bet from close range, after which the rebound turned out to be spent on Dost: 0-1.

In the remainder of the second half, however, Mechelen managed to turn the game around. After a repulsed attack, Geoffrey Hairemans sent an unexpected through ball to Hugo Cuypers, who appeared in Club’s penalty area and found the far corner. After Dost and Mats Rits were not focused, Rob Schoofs determined the final score with a surprising marker from outside the penalty area. Simon Mignolet got his hand against the ball, but was not decisive enough. Mechelen thus booked the first home win against Club since August 2014.
