Gianluigi Donnarumma gets permission to wear the goalkeeper shirt with number 50 at Paris Saint-Germain. Normally it is forbidden for a goalkeeper to use such a number, but for the closing post from AC Milan an exception is made by competition organizer LFP. Donnarumma was already wearing the number 50 shirt when he was officially presented by PSG last week.

“Choosing a different jersey number is against the rules,” the LFP said in a statement on Sunday. “The numbers 1, 16 and 30 are exclusive and only for the goalkeepers in Ligue 1, which is even mandatory. As a last resort, shirt number 40 can be used for a goalkeeper. All clubs in France are obliged to have a shirt with number 33. This shirt may not be assigned to a player and can be used if there is a last minute change within a squad.” At PSG, however, all numbers for the goalkeepers were already given.

Keylor Navas has number 1, Sergio Rico number 16, Alexandre Letellier number 30 and Denis Franchi number 40. Partly because of this, Donnarumma stuck to number 50 and as it turns out, that is also allowed by the French football authorities. PSG and the Italian keeper are given permission for this because there are more than thirty contract players in Paris. In that case, it is possible for Ligue 1 clubs to use shirt numbers above 30 for players in the A-squad.

“If a club can explain why there are more than thirty players under contract, then the competition committee can allow a different number,” the LFP added. Donnarumma can choose another different number next year. If PSG sell one or more goalkeepers, there is also the possibility that he will take over a fixed goalkeeper number. At AC Milan, the PSG acquisition always wore the shirt with shirt number 99, as a reference to his 1999 birth year.
