Devyne Rensch looked up to Daley Blind in the run-up to his transfer to the A-selection of Ajax, he told in conversation with Ajax Life. In the eyes of the eighteen-year-old Rensch, the veteran did almost everything right, which made it exciting to approach his teammate in the initial phase. All nerves have now disappeared and he hopes to conquer his place in the team of trainer Erik ten Hag next season.

Rensch had his breakthrough in the A-selection after an injury at Noussair Mazraoui, but the run-up to that was not easy for the young defender. “I looked up to Daley Blind the most,” Rensch says in an extensive interview with Ajax Life. “Everything he did, I went to see how he did it. I still do, because he is just a very good player. We also talk a lot. In the beginning I found it difficult to approach him, but I soon noticed that he was open to my questions.”

Rensch completed an internship at PSV in 2016, but was not hired in Eindhoven. A week later he received a letter from Ajax that he could also show his skills there. In Amsterdam they were convinced of his abilities. “That was a defining moment,” continues Rensch. “Apart from the fact that I had more feeling for Ajax, I would have had to go to a foster family at PSV. I don’t know if I would have wanted that. Maybe I would have gone to Ajax after a while. But the way it has gone now , it worked out perfectly.”

Ten Hag called on Rensch eighteen times in the Eredivisie last season, of which twelve times as a basic player. He also made his debut in the Europa League. Despite this, he has no problem keeping his feet on the ground. “I notice that there are more and more people who want to contact you because you are an Ajax player,” he says. “That is part of it, I think. How do I deal with that? I have to keep doing what my heart says, then it’ll be okay.”
