Austria started the European Championship group stage with a 3-1 win over North Macedonia on Sunday, and afterwards David Alaba went into the mixed zone to answer questions from journalists. The Real Madrid acquisition was questioned by Bert Maalderink about Goran Pandev’s equalizer, just ten minutes after the Austrians’ opening goal. Alaba was clearly surprised by the Dutch reporter’s question.

“We had to take the 1-1 from them fairly quickly, which was a very unfortunate moment for us,” Alaba referred to Pandev’s goal in the 28th minute. However, Maalderink did not seem to like the answer from the figurehead of the Austrian team. “Unfortunately? It was actually just very poorly defended,” he argued in the conversation with Alaba, who then looked at the reporter in amazement. “Very poorly defended? Have you seen it then?” Maalderink immediately indicated that he could have seen the goal from North Macedonia well in the stadium.

“But it was an unlucky goal, wasn’t it?”, Maalderink got right back as a question from Alaba. “Yes, but it was also a mistake,” said the reporter-cum-commentator, who indicated that the blame mainly lay with the outgoing goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann. “The goalkeeper made a mistake on the ball that was returned.” Alaba seemed to be able to understand Maalderink’s position in the end. “Yes, okay. But nevertheless it was an unfortunate situation, I want to emphasize that again.”
