Deroy Duarte is Fortuna Sittard’s newest addition. The midfielder comes transfer-free from Sparta Rotterdam, where he was in possession of an expiring contract. The 22-year-old Rotterdammer has committed himself to the club from Limburg until mid-2024.

Duarte therefore remains active in the Eredivisie, after a few weeks of uncertainty about his sporting future. “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge,” the midfielder said on the club’s website on Thursday evening. “I got a good feeling from the conversations, in which a clear plan was outlined. I am really looking forward to playing for this great club and meeting the supporters. We are all making it a great season.”

“We are very pleased that we have been able to strengthen ourselves with Deroy. He had several options, also more interesting financially, but in the end opted for us”, explains technical director Sjoerd Ars. “That says something about his character and motivation to get better. With his qualities, he gives us even more opportunities in midfield and we are convinced that he will continue to develop himself with us this year.”

Duarte joined the youth academy of Sparta Rotterdam at the age of seven and eventually made his debut for the club in 2017. In total, the midfielder played 115 matches in red and white, 29 of which were in the past season.
