Johan Derksen believes that Ronald Koeman should have taken harder action against Memphis Depay's choice to wear a sweatband around his head during the practice match against Canada. The analyst, who cynically decides to wear a sweatband, leaves the camera behind PowNed know that the action of the the Dutch striker is unnecessary.

Memphis caused quite a stir by appearing on the field against Canada last Thursday with a sweatband. The attacker also plays with the infamous sweatband against Iceland.

Koeman did not really know what to think of the sweatband after the match against Canada (4-0) on Thursday. On Sunday, the selector indicated that he was unpleasantly surprised, because he only knew just before kick-off that Memphis would play with a sweatband.

The sweatband also caused a stir among analysts and journalists. For example, Pierre van Hooijdonk came up with the nickname 'Memphis Kyrgios', referring to top tennis player Nick Kyrgios, and Valentijn Driessen from De Telegraaf said that 'you have to stand out somehow if you don't succeed as a player'. Driessen subsequently agreed that Memphis played a great game against Canada.

Derksen, in turn, says he sees nothing in Memphis' choice. “I think it's a ridiculous sweatband, you know. It fits perfectly with Memphis, which always has something special.”

“I don't understand why Koeman allowed it because he doesn't have long hair. In the past you had players with long hair. They had such a bond, otherwise their hair would hang over their eyes.”

Derksen then decides to wear a similar band at the insistence of presenter Mark Baanders. “I need a strap like that with my hair,” the analyst concludes, laughing. “Otherwise all the hairs fall over my eyes in annoyance when Wilfred asks Genee something.”
