Latest update:

Ajax seems to be able to say goodbye to Jorge Sánchez soon. The Mexican defender is about to complete his transition to Cruz Azul, Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday afternoon. The deal will reportedly earn Ajax around three million euros.

It is not the first time that Sánchez has been linked with a return to his native country. In January the Mexican branch of ESPN already reported a bid of four million euros for the right back loaned to FC Porto.

Sánchez transferred from the Mexican Club América to Ajax in the summer of 2022, for a fee of around five million euros. However, he never managed to become a permanent fixture in Amsterdam, so he was loaned out to FC Porto a year later.

In Portugal, however, he also has to make do with substitute appearances. His rental period at Porto will end next summer. However, he has probably already played his last match for the Amsterdam team.

Like the rest of Ajax's selection, Sánchez was not spared criticism. “It hurt me a lot. I started to believe everything people said, but thanks to my mental coach and my wife I became mentally stronger,” he told Mexican media in October last year.

Sánchez, who still has a contract until mid-2026 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, played 26 official matches for Ajax. He scored three times and provided three assists.

Cruz Azul is currently ranked second in the top tier in Mexico. The gap to leader Club América is only two points after seventeen games played.
