Matthijs de Ligt was sent off on Sunday evening in the 55th minute at a 0-0 score with red in the eighth final of the European Championship against the Czech Republic. Due to the red card, the the Dutch international will miss the quarterfinals against Denmark next Saturday, if the Netherlands qualify. In a duel with Patrik Schick, the Juventus defender went to the ground, after which he stopped the ball with the ball, thus depriving the Czech striker a great chance.

The Russian referee Sergey Karasev initially drew the yellow card for De Ligt ten minutes after the break. On the advice of the VAR, Karasev stepped aside and after seeing the images, he decided to withdraw his yellow card and exchange it for a direct red card. De Ligt is the first the Dutch international to receive a red card at a European Championship since John Heitinga in 2004, also against the Czech Republic.

Just before the moment when De Ligt made a mistake, Donyell Malen missed a huge opportunity. After De Ligt’s red card, De Boer chose to bring in Quincy Promes for Malen.
