Christian Eriksen will receive an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), the Danish Football Association reports. This is a subcutaneous defibrillator that intervenes in cardiac arrhythmias. After several investigations, the doctors at the Rigshospitalet have decided that this is the best solution for the Danish footballer, who went to the ground with a cardiac arrest on Saturday in the game against Finland. Eriksen has given the green light for this option.

“After several tests on his heart, it was decided that he needs an ICD. This device is necessary after his cardiac arrest as a result of cardiac arrhythmias”, reacts federal doctor Morten Boesen. “Christian has accepted the solution and the plan is supported by national and international specialists, who all recommend the same treatment.”

the Dutch international Daley Blind also has an internal defibrillator. The Ajax player received this after he had to deal with heart problems. “An ICD box goes off if someone develops a dangerous heart rhythm disorder,” explained David Smeekes, a doctor who works at the Heart Foundation. AT5. “What happens is that the box continuously monitors the heart. If the device receives an indication that a disorder is occurring, it gives a shock that resets your heart, as it were. When you get a shock, you can drop out for a while, but if the box works properly, your heart will return to a normal rhythm.”

In August last year, Blind’s ICD box went off during Ajax’s practice match against Hertha BSC. After the ICD has gone off, Smeekes says a check-up in the hospital is sufficient. “After a shock, the cardiologist checks how the heart rhythm has progressed, this is common and in most cases there are no further consequences,” said Smeekes. After Blind’s ICD box went off, he resumed training relatively quickly.
