Daley Blind and Jan Vertonghen can live with the 2-2 draw in the Champions League match between Benfica and Ajax. After the game in the eighth finals, the defenders appear together in front of the camera for Ziggo Sports, where they speak to reporter Wytse van der Goot. Blind calls the division of points ‘a result’, while the Benfica defender is especially pleased with the fact that his team came back from behind twice.

“In the end, this is a result, out at Benfica,” says Blind. “But if you are 2-1 up, you go for the win. It’s annoying that you give it away then. We will have to finish it in Amsterdam.” Blind and Vertonghen agreed to Ziggo to keep the interview together, as the duo are still friends. “Our bond has been good since Ajax, we have always kept in touch”, concludes the Ajax player, supplemented by Vertonghen.

“We no longer walk on the field together. Normally you see each other in the catacombs, but that no longer happens. You no longer shake each other’s hands before the game. We met at the corners, but then you are in a certain focus. After the game you talk for a while,” said the Belgian defender. After a strong second half of Benfica, Vertonghen hoped for more than a division of points, but can also live with a draw.

“Ajax were definitely better in the first half, they had many opportunities that were played out. After the 2-2 we both went looking for the win. Then a lot of spaces were created, which we could have made better use of with our qualities. But we will also get that space in Amsterdam. If you fall behind twice and see the game image, you should not be dissatisfied. On the other hand, we always have to win at home. But going to Amsterdam with a 2-2 score is not bad,” concludes Vertonghen, who will appear with Benfica in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on 15 March for the return.
