In the run-up to the European Championship, Andy van der Meijde looks back on his own period as an international for the Dutch national team. The former wing attacker said he had a good working relationship with then national coach Dick Advocaat. However, Van der Meijde was once caught by the trainer who left Feyenoord when he had taken a girl to his hotel room.

“During the European Championship (2004 in Portugal, ed.) I was actually quite calm”, Van der Meijde opens in an interview with Veronica Inside. “Of course I got myself drowsy, yes I just sit there in that room. No, I didn’t do women then. I was calm actually and not so wild yet. But Lawyer caught me once, but that was at a practice match against France at home in De Kuip. Then I did have a girl in the room. And then I was the asshole the next day.”

“We always went for a walk on the beach and then Lawyer said to Willem van Hanegem (then assistant national coach of the Dutch, ed.): ‘Who was it?’ Then I heard ‘Van der Meijde’. I already knew about cunt, they’ve got me now. I had a girl in the room and had to be back at 00:00 am And I was back in the room at 23:59. So I would have kept to the rules,” the former international of the Dutch looks back with a joke.
