Lucas Hernández has suffered a serious knee injury for the second time in two years, Paris Saint-Germain announced. The defender will no longer play this calendar year and will therefore miss out on a possible Champions League final and the European Championship.

Hernández was injured just before halftime on Wednesday evening during the semi-final of the Champions League between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain (1-0).

The Frenchman wanted to block the way of Niclas Füllkrug, who had broken through, with a block, but was unable to do so and ended up in an unfortunate position. Hernández immediately covered his eyes and seemed to realize that something was wrong.

Once again because he is no stranger to a similar injury. It is the second serious knee injury in two years for the wing defender. Füllkrug also scored the only goal of the match.

In the 2022/23 season, Hernández was also sidelined for almost a year with a similar injury. That happened during the World Cup in Qatar, when he twisted his knee just before Australia's 0-1 draw.

The defender remained lying down and immediately gestured that it was serious. Hernández was substituted, after which brother Theo replaced him. There were less than ten minutes on the clock at the time.

Due to his injury, Hernández has to cancel the European Championship, which starts on June 14. The defender has been placed in a group with France that includes the Dutch team. During the last mutual meeting in October, he participated in the entire competition.

A possible Champions League final will therefore not happen for Hernández. Next week, Paris Saint-Germain must make up for a 1-0 deficit at home against Dortmund to secure the top European club stage.
