The return of Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly not bad for Manchester United. According to the website Love The Sales, the Portuguese number 7 shirt is selling faster than ever in England and beyond. The sale of the shirts with Ronaldo’s name on the back involves a record amount of 220 million euros. The 36-year-old attacker is likely to make his Manchester United debut on Saturday in the home game against Newcastle United. Old Trafford, which is sold out for this game, can accommodate more than 75,000 visitors.

The 220 million euros that the sale of the shirts worldwide has generated in fan shops and online does not automatically end up on the account of Manchester United. According to Price of Football, only seven percent of the total amount is earmarked for the Red Devils, which equates to more than fifteen million euros. With this, Manchester United has already earned back the transfer costs for Ronaldo, because fifteen million euros was deposited on August 31 for the star player from Juventus.

Stuart McClure of Love The Sales is keeping a close eye on the madness surrounding Ronaldo’s shirt sales. “We are seeing a lot of record sales of Ronaldo’s shirt number 7 online. We have reached the point where the demand for his shirt is greater than the supply.” The online search for ‘Ronaldo 7’ has increased by a whopping 600 percent from a year ago, when he was still a Juventus player.

Ronaldo has a clear lead over Lionel Messi, who traded Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in the sale of shirts bearing his name and number. The shirts with ‘Messi 30’ have resulted in a total amount of 120 million euros, 100 million euros less than Ronaldo. 8.5 million euros of this will end up in the account of PSG.
