Devyne Rensch is developing at lightning speed at Ajax. The defender was undisputed in the right back position last season and even made his debut with the Dutch national team in September. The up-and-coming talent was forced to stop playing football six years ago and the question was whether the defender would ever return to the fields. Shock therapy ultimately offered a solution for Rensch, he says in an extensive interview with the General Newspaper.

Rensch played at the age of twelve with the amateurs of VV Unicum, when he suffered from growing pains. So much so, that he was advised to temporarily stop playing football. “Yes, that was terrible to hear,” confesses the defender in the General Newspaper. “I mean: everyone wants to play football. Me too. And that is suddenly no longer allowed.” However, the Ajax player understood the decision. “I just couldn’t anymore. At a certain point I only walked on my toes. I had so much pain in my Achilles tendon. And yes, then you can’t play football either. But I always kept hope.”

Doubts arose whether Rensch could ever make his comeback on the field, but the defender himself kept full confidence. His youth coach at the time, Peter van der Horst, played an important role in his return. The former PEC football player brought the right back into contact with a physiotherapist who uses shock therapy to improve the blood flow in his right leg. This immediately had the desired effect. After an intensive rehabilitation, Rensch’s comeback on the youth fields was a fact.

Rensch now has thirty duels to his name at Ajax and as icing on the cake he made his debut for the Dutch national team against Turkey (6-1) at the beginning of September. This week he is preparing with the Dutch Juniors for the European Championship qualifiers with Young Switzerland (Friday) and Young Wales (Tuesday). “Fortunately, I no longer have to think about that pain,” Rensch continues. “I don’t suffer from anything anymore. That’s why I would like to say to everyone: never give up, no matter what setback you have to deal with. Keep hoping, keep working. Then it will really work out. You can see that in me. “
