Clarence Seedorf would be interested in the position of director of football affairs at Ajax, Mike Verweij reported Monday evening. In the podcast kick off by The Telegraph tells the reporter about the alleged ambition of Seedorf, who earlier in the day was mentioned by colleague Valentijn Driessen as a suitable candidate to succeed the fired Marc Overmars.

“I have heard from a very reliable source that Clarence Seedorf is open to a director position at Ajax”, Verweij starts. “He would really like to be director of football affairs. I also think it would be a very good choice. You might also consider putting someone next to him. I think it is very important that Seedorf can just call the director of Real Madrid and Juventus. Then you can put someone next to it, just a former agent or whoever. Someone who just takes a lot of work off your hands. It is a comprehensive task, especially if you do document everything.”

“It must be made clear to him that he should not have the ambition to become the trainer of Ajax 1,” Verweij warns Ajax. “In any case, Overmars did not have that, also because he did not have a trainer’s diploma. Because that’s the danger of a director with a trainer’s diploma… He can just wish to sit in the trainer’s chair. He will have to be very aware of his role as director of football affairs.” Seedorf was most recently active as national coach of Cameroon and before that time had few successful periods as trainer of Deportivo La Coruña, Shenzhen FC and AC Milan.

In the morning edition of The Telegraph Driessen wrote about the ‘suitability’ of Seedorf as the successor to Overmars. The football chief is of the opinion that Ajax would thus protect ‘the thought and heritage’. “It would be des Ajax and in the spirit of Cruijff to get someone like Seedorf. Seedorf was less successful as a trainer, but he manages his business well. The brand and image of Ajax would immediately receive an international boost with Seedorf in the role of director of football affairs. It has been taken into account that he is close with general manager Edwin van der Sar”, says Driessen.
