Bad luck for Jasper Cillessen on Friday evening in the initial phase of NEC's away match against RKC Waalwijk. The goalkeeper stopped Dario van den Buijs' penalty in the nineteenth minute, but nevertheless did not play a heroic role. A teammate caught up too early, so the penalty had to be taken. It was the first time that Cillessen saved a penalty on Dutch fields.

Cillessen chose his left corner and thus neutralized Van den Buijs' effort. The left-footed defender took the penalty because regular taker Michiel Kramer was injured in the stands. Disappointment for Van den Buijs and great joy for Cillessen and his teammates.

However, that joy quickly disappeared. After a VAR check, referee Dennis Higler ruled that a NEC player was already in the penalty area when Van den Buijs took the shot. This allowed RKC to try again from eleven meters. With results, because David Min left Cillessen without a chance with a bang in the left corner.

NEC therefore fell behind 2-0 in Waalwijk. Min opened the score in the seventh minute. A major setback for the people of Nijmegen, three days after reaching the semi-finals in the TOTO KNVB Cup.

No penalty killer
It was the first time for Cillessen to save a penalty on Dutch fields. In Spain he managed to save a penalty five times. Four times as goalkeeper for Valencia and once as goalkeeper for FC Barcelona.
