Chelsea and Liverpool did not score at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening: 0-0. The formation from London, led by interim manager Bruno Saltor, had the most chances and saw two goals disallowed. Liverpool climb from ninth to eighth place in the Premier League with the result, while Chelsea remain eleventh.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp had to do without the sick Virgil van Dijk, who was replaced by Joël Matip. In total, the German chose no less than six different names than last Saturday, when Manchester City lost 4-1. Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, among others, had to settle for a place on the bench. At Chelsea, N’Golo Kante started again in the base after a long injury. Wesley Fofana was also allowed to show it from the first minute, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mykhailo Mudryk were on the bench. Hakim Ziyech was not included in the selection at all.

Chelsea were the better side in the first half and had an early opportunity on the opening goal. After former Willem II player Konstantinos Tsimikas lost the ball, Enzo Fernández sent João Félix deep. The Portuguese’s attempt could eventually be blocked by Matip. From a falling ball after a corner, Reece James seemed to make it 1-0 in the 25th minute, but the goal was rejected because it had preceded offside. At the end of the first company, Liverpool also started to show themselves, but Joe Gomez (rescue Kepa Arrizabalaga) and Fabinho (next via Fofana) were unable to score.

Early in the second half, after Mateo Kovacic shot over in a promising position, another Chelsea goal was disallowed. Kanté put Kai Havertz face to face with Alisson Becker, the goalkeeper made the save, but through Havertz the ball still went in. However, the VAR saw that Havertz did this with his arm, so the hit did not go through. Halfway through the second act, both managers decided to switch in the hope of some offensive momentum. Mudryk, Gakpo and Salah, among others, came within the lines. However, that would no longer lead to great opportunities and goals.
