Chelsea and Benfica have reached an agreement on the transfer of Enzo Fernández, Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday. The Londoners pay the buyout clause of 120 million euros for the 22-year-old midfielder and have therefore spent no less than 610 (!) Million euros on incoming transfers this season: a record. Both clubs are currently busy getting the paperwork in order on time. Fernández gets on a plane to London as soon as possible to join Chelsea.

Fernández impressed with Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar and Chelsea did not miss that. The Blues were busy almost the entire winter transfer window with the arrival of the midfielder, but Benfica did not want to lose his pupil. The club of ex-PSV player Roger Schmidt continued to point Chelsea to the buyout clause of 120 million euros in Fernández’s contract. The Londoners did not want to comply with this at first, but have now tacked anyway.

The player himself had set his sights on a transfer to Chelsea for some time, but did not want to mutiny to get it done. Fernández hoped that the two clubs would reach an agreement to make his dream transfer a reality. That is what happened with this one. The Argentinian only played for Benfica since last summer, which paid fourteen million euros to River Plate to release him there. Ultimately, Fernández’s employment with Benfica is limited to just 29 games.

Chelsea and club owner Todd Boehly have finally secured the desired acquisition in midfield. The English also strengthened themselves this winter with Mykhaylo Mudryk, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoît Badiashile, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto. João Félix was also rented from Atlético Madrid until the end of the season. All this already cost Chelsea more than 210 million euros this winter, but with the transfer of Fernández there will be another 120 million euros.
