After last week’s painful 1-4 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, angry supporters at Goodison Park called for the board to be sacked. Brands, director of player policy at Everton, resigned after the disappointing run, because there is a “clear difference in the vision and direction of the club for the future”. Manager Rafael Benítez now looks set to take control of the club’s purchases, having secured the backing of wealthy owner Moshiri.
According to Carragher, Moshiri is responsible for Everton’s sporting crisis. “It wouldn’t come to that under David Moyes, then Everton had something special,” said the Liverpool club icon. Sky Sports. “They stood for something. Then Moshiri came and look how many managers he’s worn out. If you count the interim managers, he’s had eight managers. He is now in his third football director. The money he spends is mind-boggling and they’re only getting worse,” he told Sky Sports.
“Under Moshiri, they have signed 58 players. That’s why I talk about this club as a joke, it’s a mess at the moment,” continued Carragher. “Moshiri is the man with the money. They are afraid to go against him, but the decisions he makes are really bad. He has absolutely no knowledge of football.” Finally, Carragher also stands up for Brands. “I’m not defending him, but I’m sure the managers weren’t his choice. And he didn’t make the most of the players either. He was important for PSV as technical director, but at Everton he was not in charge.”
