Canada’s women’s team has won the Olympic gold for the first time in history. In the final against Sweden, penalty kicks had to offer a solution on Friday afternoon. The penalty shootout has been described on social media as one of the most exciting and worst ever, with Sweden taking four out of six and Canada three.

Sweden took the lead in the 34th minute of regular time, as Stina Blackstenius tapped in her fifth goal of the tournament on a pass from Kosovare Asllani. Midway through the second half, Jessie Fleming tied the score from a penalty awarded after Amanda Ilestedt fouled Christine Sinclair. The penalty was shot in by Fleming in the left corner.

The remainder of the match did not yield a winner, which meant that penalties had to be taken. Asllani missed the first penalty on behalf of Sweden, while Fleming scored. Canada had a good start, but then Ashley Lawrence, Vanessa Gilles and Adriana Leon missed in succession, while Nathalie Björn and Olivia Schough did score for Sweden. After that, however, three Swedes also missed their penalty and Deanne Rose and Julia Grosso made the decision.
