SC Cambuur booked the third league win in a row in the Eredivisie on Sunday evening. The team of coach Henk de Jong was 2-1 too strong for FC Utrecht at home thanks to goals from Roberts Uldrikis and Jamie Jacobs. Moussa Sylla did something in return on behalf of the Domstedelingen. It had only happened twice before that Cambuur managed to book three victories in a row at the highest level, in 1993 and 2014. With the victory, the Leeuwarders climb to seventh place in the ranking with 21 points from 13 matches. Utrecht remains fourth.

Before the duel between Cambuur and Utrecht was well underway, referee Dennis Higler had already interrupted the game twice. The game was halted in the first minute after fireworks were thrown onto the field; after ten minutes, larger groups of supporters entered the stadium to set off fireworks, move into the stands and onto the pitch. De Jong then walked towards the corner of the field to encourage the supporters to leave the stadium. It was then the home team that got off to the best start via Issa Kallon. The winger pulled in from the left, but saw his bet turned by Maarten Paes.

The second chance was a hit. Again an attack on the left preceded, after which Jacobs delivered the ball to Uldrikis and was able to finish the striker from close range: 1-0. Utrecht was certainly not the lesser team, but had trouble playing football through the well-organized wall of Cambuur. The biggest chance for the visitors was for Othman Boussaid. The midfielder had the ball a meter from the goal before heading in on a pass from Hidde ter Avest, but headed wide. Not much later Sylla was accurate. The attacker was given time and space to hit from more than twenty meters and was lucky that his bet was touched on the way by Alex Bangura: 1-1.

In the second act, the game went back and forth and both teams provided an entertaining spectacle. Ten minutes after the break Cambuur took the lead. After a pass from David Sambissa, Ter Avest couldn’t get the ball away, after which Jacobs pulled the trigger: 2-1. Utrecht did have chances to equalize in the remainder of the second half, but Anastasios Douvikas, among others, left them unused when he encountered goalkeeper Sonny Stevens. Mees Hoedemakers forced Paes to make a save on behalf of Cambuur. The home team rightly claimed a penalty in injury time after a Warmerdam foul on Michael Breij, but Higler did not want that.
