SC Cambuur does not want David Sambissa to go to the Africa Cup, it became clear on Thursday. The attacker has been called up for Gabon, but according to the Frisian club he is still recovering from an injury. Besides Sambissa, Issa Kallon (Sierra Leone) also received an invitation to participate in the final tournament. Clubs in the Eredivisie have to give up African players to the Africa Cup.

Cambuur reports on the club website that ‘it is still very much the question’ whether Sambissa will play at the Africa Cup. The club has refused his call, as the attacker is struggling with (the aftermath of) an injury sustained in the home game against FC Utrecht (2-1 win). Cambuur says that Sambissa has not yet completed individual training and has not yet participated in group sessions.

However, there is a chance that Sambissa will just play at the Africa Cup. The FIFA regulations prescribe that the Gabonese Confederation may call on him to make a diagnosis himself. Gabon is waiting for the Africa Cup group matches against the Comoros, Ghana and Morocco. Kallon, who did receive the green light from Cambuur, will take on Algeria, Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea with Sierra Leone in the group stage.

The Africa Cup starts on January 9 with the meeting between Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The final is scheduled for February 6. Due to the omicron variant, there has been a lot of uncertainty among the participating countries in recent weeks. Despite this, it was decided last week well before the start of the tournament to simply let the duels be played. Not only Cambuur has to give up African players in the Eredivisie. Ajax will probably lose Sébastien Haller (Ivory Coast), André Onana (Cameroon), Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco) and Mohammed Kudus (Ghana) for at least a month. Onana has already been included in Cameroon’s final roster. PSV also has an international in Ibrahim Sangaré (Ivory Coast), who will most likely travel in January.
