SC Cambuur has already equaled the points total with which it relegated from the Eredivisie in 2016. The team of trainer Henk de Jong won 1-2 on Saturday evening at PEC Zwolle and therefore currently occupies eighth place in the Eredivisie, with eighteen points from twelve games. Hekkensluiter PEC, on the other hand, is more firmly in last place: Sparta Rotterdam won 0-3 against Willem II earlier in the evening and therefore takes a distance.
Cambuur played his 250th Eredivisie match in the MAC3PARK Stadium and started well. The first possibility was through Daishawn Redan for PEC, but then Doke Schmidt and Mees Hoedemakers showed themselves emphatically on behalf of the visitors. With 22 minutes on the clock, Hoedemakers opened the score on behalf of Cambuur: the midfielder was given room to shoot from the edge of the penalty area and outsmarted goalkeeper Kostas Lamprou with a shot that fell through the inside of the post.
The remainder of the first half did not provide too many opportunities, but after the break Cambuur quickly hit the mark. Robin Maulun was allowed to moor at about twenty meters from a free kick and placed the ball in the top right corner, out of Lamprou’s reach. PEC did not leave it at that and became more and more dangerous with more than twenty minutes. For example, goalkeeper Sonny Stevens had to intervene when Redan appeared in front of him, while a shot by substitute Luka Adzic curled just over the wrong side of the post.
With more than ten minutes to go, the tension was completely restored in the match, when Dean Huiberts headed the 1-2 against the ropes. PEC looked more emphatically for the equalizer in the final phase, mainly by pumping the ball into Cambuur’s penalty area. Cambuur’s defense held up in the six minutes of injury time, however, as a result of which PEC suffered its tenth defeat of the season. The backlog of the last at number fourteen (RKC Waalwijk), fifteen (Sparta Rotterdam) and sixteen (FC Groningen) is now six points. Fortuna Sittard has five points more, but also has two games left.
