Latest update:

There is a lot of speculation in Spain about the actual reason behind Memphis Depay's break with Atlético Madrid. The Dutchman is no longer considered necessary next season and will leave the Spanish capital on a free transfer this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Depay and Atlético Madrid have jointly chosen not to proceed with an automatic contract extension, making him available for free. The Dutch international is one of the top earners.

Cadena SER More details will be released on Thursday. Neither the club nor the technical staff wanted to continue with the Dutchman, who played less than hoped due to injuries when he was about to become the first striker.

The actual reason would be that after his injury in the Champions League, Memphis would have given priority to the European Championship with the Dutch team instead of helping his team in the competition.

It earned him public attention from Diego Simeone and was the final trigger to conclude that Memphis' time at Atlético has come to an end. The attacker was acquired from FC Barcelona last winter for three million euros.

So far this season, Memphis has played 1,202 minutes, spread over 31 appearances. He scored nine goals and two assists. The Madrid top club has now accepted that he will not yield a transfer fee, but mainly wants to make room in the salary budget.

Depay will use the European Championship to gain exposure to potential new clubs. The thirty-year-old attacker is usually the first choice at the point of attack for national coach Ronald Koeman.
