Ronald Koeman does not want to put Brian Brobbey and Memphis Depay together at the forefront of the European Championship 2024, he made it clear at the press conference on Monday. The national coach is certain that he wants to play with three midfielders and he does not rule out switching systems during and between matches.

Koeman has included no fewer than eight midfielders in his selection, while the national coach played with only two midfielders, including in the European Championship qualifying match he won against Ireland (1-0).

“Why did I select eight? Because we are going to play with three midfielders,” Koeman reveals during the press moment. “It doesn't have to mean a system change. We can also have three players at the back and play with three midfielders.”

“My preference is to play with three midfielders. And then two or three attackers. We can play multiple systems. It may well be that we occasionally find ourselves with four defenders. It could also be that we end up with five defenders.”

“Whether it is also the reason that Georginio Wijnaldum is there? No, the reason is that I have a past with him,” Koeman emphasizes. “He has played more than ninety international matches. I want to see him with me for a week. Then I can judge him much better.”

Koeman is already sure that Wijnaldum will get playing time in the coming international match, in which Scotland and Germany are the opponents. “He will play part of both matches. Whether there will be one or two or an entire match, we haven't decided yet.”

“A system with two strikers, Memphis and Brobbey together? No, that is not my preference. He will be one of those guys in the striker, but Memphis can of course also play on the left wing,” said the selector.
