Arsenal settled the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur in his favor on Saturday afternoon. The Gunners came out strong, but still faced a 1-1 score at half-time after goals from Thomas Partey and Harry Kane. Thanks to Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka, Arsenal still won the game after the break: 3-1. Tottenham had to continue with one man less with an hour on the clock after a red card for Emerson Royal.

Arteta made only two changes to his starting eleven compared to the Premier League game won with Brentford (0-3) before the international break. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Martin Ødegaard returned from injuries, at the expense of Fábio Vieira and Kieran Tierney. With the visitors, Heung-min Son, who was good for a hat trick against Leicester City (6-2) as a substitute, started from the first whistle. Antonio Conte could not rely on the injured Dejan Kulusevski against Arsenal.

The derby certainly did not disappoint in the first act. Gabriel Martinelli handed out a first warning early with a shot to the post in an opening phase that saw Arsenal call the shots. Tottenham managed to become dangerous for the first time after fifteen minutes. Richarlison had the perfect opportunity to open the score from Son’s free kick, but had to watch as Aaron Ramsdale made an excellent save.

Arteta’s team played dominantly and eventually managed to express the dominance of the field in the score. Ben White put wide on Thomas Partey, who beautifully found the crossing from about twenty meters with a placed ball: 1-0. The Spurs came alongside with half an hour on the clock. Son and Kane started a smooth attack, after which the danger seemed to have passed until Xhaka suffered a sloppy loss of possession in his own box. Gabriel then fouled Richarlison, leaving referee Antony Taylor with nothing to do but point to the penalty spot. Kane stayed cool from the penalty spot, becoming the first player ever to score 100 goals in Premier League away games.

Even after the break there was plenty to enjoy in the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal came out of the dressing room strong again and saw Hugo Lloris make a huge mistake in the 50th minute. The experienced goalkeeper dived over a ball, after which Jesus could simply tap in the 2-1. Things quickly went from bad to worse for the visitors after that. Conte saw his team end up with ten men after Emerson Royal short circuited. The right back planted his studs on Martinelli’s standing leg and was then able to push in with a red card. Arsenal were determined to close the game quickly and eventually did so through Xhaka. The midfielder was found by Martinelli and then scored with a diagonal shot. The home team then slowed down, although substitute Tierney was close to 4-1 with a long shot in the final minutes.
