Daley Blind does not give up in his mission to be fit for the European Championship in time. The versatile Ajax defender sends out a hopeful signal on Thursday morning with a message on Twitter. It is indeed part of an advertising campaign by sponsor Adidas, but nevertheless Blind’s post should give the supporters of Ajax and the Dutch national team courage. The Ajax player is currently recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained by the the Dutch.

“Where some see obstacles, I see opportunities to come back stronger,” said the combative Blind in the Twitter message on Thursday. By the way, it is the defender’s first message on the social media channel since mid-December. Despite the ankle injury, Blind remains involved with his fellow Ajax players. On Sunday he appeared on the field of De Kuip with crutches to celebrate the 2-1 victory over Vitesse in the final of the TOTO KNVB Cup with his colleagues.

Blind sustained the nasty ankle injury in the World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar (0-7 victory) at the end of March. The thirty-year-old left back and central midfielder has been convalescing ever since. Time is running out, however, as national coach Frank de Boer will announce the final European Championship selection sometime in May. The Dutch will open the European Championship on June 13 with a game against Ukraine in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. This is followed by clashes with Austria (June 17) and North Macedonia (June 21) in the group stage.

Erik ten Hag fervently hopes that Blind will be fit in time for the group phase of the European Championship, although Ajax’s coach has his doubts about that. “I think Daley is going for it. But when I look at his injury, I think it will be very difficult”, it sounds in conversation with The Telegraph. “Not that the injury is complicated, that time is just ahead. But it is going very well, so the hope has not been lost yet.”
