Referee Björn Kuipers has been appointed by UEFA for the match between Spain and Slovakia, Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. It will be the second game of the Dutch arbitrator at this European Championship. He previously led the game between Denmark and Belgium (1-2).
Slovakia started the European Championship with a surprising 1-2 victory over Poland. Last Friday, the victory did not get a good follow-up against Sweden (1-0 loss). The Spaniards are still waiting for the first victory this final round. After a goalless draw against Sweden, the team of national coach Luis Enrique also failed to beat Poland (1-1). Spain is the number three in the group and must win to finish in the first two in Group E. Slovakia has enough of a draw.
Kuipers received compliments last week for his performance in the game between Denmark and Belgium. He stopped the game in the tenth minute to pay tribute to Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in the game against Finland. Kuipers will be assisted in Seville on Wednesday by his regular assistants Sander van Roekel and Erwni Zeinstra. Pol van Boekel has been appointed as VAR and will receive assistance from Kevin Blom and the Germans Christian Gittelmann and Bastian Dankert, while Stéphanie Frappart will stand along the field as the fourth official.
