The match between Villarreal and Manchester United started later than planned on Tuesday evening. The Champions League match was supposed to start at 6.45 pm, but referee Felix Brych had problems with his technical aids. The equipment he uses to communicate with his assistants was down; presumably the batteries were dead. At 6:50 p.m., Brych entered the catacombs to seek a solution. The players of both clubs kicked the ball around on the field; at 6:52 p.m. Brych returned to the field to get the game going.
