Bayern Munich has seized the DFL Supercup for the eighth time in club history. The reigning national champion and cup holder took on Borussia Dortmund, last season’s runner-up in the Bundesliga, on Wednesday evening, and won 3-2. With a defeat of Bayern, both clubs would be on the same level with seven Supercups won, but thanks to the victory, Bayern remains the club that added the prize to the palmares most often.

In its own Allianz Arena, Bayern got off to the start it hoped for. After just over half an hour, coach Hansi Flick’s team led 2-0; the first goal was scored in the eighteenth minute by Corentin Tolisso. The midfielder was served by Robert Lewandowski in the penalty area after a swift breakout, which was set up by Alphonso Davies and Kingsley Coman. At first, Tolisso’s shot ended up against the bottom of the crossbar via goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, but in the rebound it was still hit for the Frenchman.

The 2-0 was credited to Müller, who headed the ball in at the far post after a cross by Davies from midfield. Despite the early setbacks, Borussia Dortmund did not give up. Lucien Favre’s team forced Bayern to lose possession six minutes before the break, which led to a quick breakout. Erling Braut Haaland reached the detached Julian Brandt in the penalty area and the winger rounded off convincingly from close range. Bayern’s lead at halftime, however, was justified: der Rekordmeister was fiercer and stronger in the first half.

Despite this, Borussia Dortmund came alongside nine minutes after the break. Bayern again lost the ball in its own half due to pressure from the yellow-blacks, and again a quick breakout resulted in a goal. Six seconds after a slip from Lewandowski, Haaland was the end point of the counterattack. In the event of a draw, a penalty shootout would immediately follow to determine a winner, but it turned out not to be necessary. Bayern decided the game in a remarkable way. After Thomas Delaney’s sloppy ball loss in midfield, Bayern broke out. Lewandowski found Joshua Kimmich, who bumped into goalkeeper Hitz and landed on the grass. Nevertheless, he still got his foot against the ball in the second chance: 3-2.
