Steven Bergwijn is open to leaving Ajax, club watcher Johan Inan reports Algemeen Dagblad. According to the journalist, his management recently indicated to the Amsterdam club management that the 26-year-old attacker is willing to accept an outgoing transfer.

“Which players Ajax can get also depends on who they are going to sell from the current selection,” Inan begins in the AD Football podcast. “For example, a departure of Steven Bergwijn is an option, because he still represents a good market value.”

“A month ago, his management also informed Ajax that they were open to a transfer. That could be a nice step towards the Bundesliga or the Premier League from a sporting point of view. West Ham United is still interested in Bergwijn. But he can also choose to cash in the sandbox. Ajax will consider selling him, because they still have left winger Mika Godts on hand.”

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that there is a price tag of approximately 23 million euros around Bergwijn's neck. The Ajax captain still has a contract in the Johan Cruijff ArenA until mid-2027.

Sell more

In the summer of 2023, the then technical director brought in a team of new players. “Many of those purchases did not work out, but they do not all leave in one transfer window,” says Inan. “Ajax will sell those players in phases. You can already identify a few departing players. I expect that we will no longer see Carlos Forbs and Borna Sosa in the Johan Cruijff ArenA next season.”

The club watcher knows that Ajax tries to generate income in this way and from there make a handful of purchases. “These must be direct hits that immediately ensure that the selection becomes more balanced. You can't fix everything at once, but the most important thing is to wipe away some major scars and provide the squad with some more venom and leadership,” Inan said.
