Atlético Madrid have kept their connection with the top of La Liga on Saturday evening. Thanks to a number of nice hits, Diego Simeone’s men settled well with Celta de Vigo: 4-1. In particular, the opening goal of Ángel Correa and the third goal of Yannick Carrasco got the audience in the Wanda Metropolitano on the benches. Former FC Groningen striker Jørgen Strand Larsen played the entire match at Celta and already missed a great chance one-on-one with Ivo Grbic in the second minute.

Strand Larsen quickly sprinted away from Atlético’s defense at that moment, and then shot straight at the keeper. In the spectacular opening phase, Atlético could have fallen behind anyway. Grbic, who replaced the injured Jan Oblak under the bar, was able to prevent Hugo Mallo from heading in from close range with extreme intervention. Against the ratio Atlético made the 1-0 after nine minutes. That was the result of a brilliant attack, in which Rodrigo de Paul put the ball from the right flank ready for Ángel Correa. The Argentinian managed to outwit the quickly released Agustín Marchesín from within the penalty area with a shot in the corner: 1-0.

Two minutes later, Celta defender Renato Tapia intercepted the ball in a dangerous spot. The former Feyenoord player put Iago Aspas to work, who fired his shot at the post. Atlético then showed nothing in the first half, but that soon changed after the break. Rodrigo de Paul started from seventeen meters and was lucky to see the ball change direction along the way. As a result, Marchesín was on the wrong foot: 2-0.

After just over an hour of play, Simeone brought in two new attacking guns with Antoine Griezmann and João Félix. Griezmann is allowed by Atlético to play less than thirty minutes each time due to contractual agreements with Barcelona, to prevent the option to buy in the lease from being automatically mandatory. Atlético made the decisive 3-0 just after the duo’s entrance. That came in the name of Yannick Carrasco, who cleverly slalomed around Mallo during a long dribble, to hit the short corner from eight meters.

Just five minutes later, Celta also scored an honorary goal. Gabri Veiga was overlooked by Atlético’s defense and shot in from a difficult angle: 3-1. Grbic will count on the tenable-looking goal. It made little difference to the distribution of the points. Atlético ran through an own goal by Unai Núñez in the final phase to 4-1. That goal came about after a long dribble by substitute Matheus Cunha, who actually wanted to give Félix a tap.
