Bayer Leverkusen has appointed a new trainer two months after the resignation of Peter Bosz. The current number six of the Bundesliga will place responsibility in the hands of Gerardo Seoane next season, who will succeed interim coach Hannes Wolf. The Swiss, who is currently at the helm of Young Boys, will sign a contract until mid-2024, while Wolf will return to the German Football Association after this season as coach of Germany Under-19.

Seoane is no stranger to Leverkusen, as the coach with Young Boys in the battle for the Europa League faced Bosz’s team in the sixteenth final this season. At home, the Swiss were too strong 4-3, after which the return in Germany was also won 0-2. In the eighth final, Ajax then turned out to be too strong over two duels. The elimination in the Europa League cost Bosz the head a month later, after which Wolf came over from the DFB to finish the season. With one round to go, Leverkusen is already assured of participation in the group stage of the Europa League as number six.

“With Gerardo Seoane we want to play offensive football again next season”, sports director Rudi Völler explains the choice for Seoane on the website of the German club. “He has won the Swiss Championship with Young Boys three times in a row and managed to win the cup in 2020. He did so with an attractive and offensive game idea that is very close to our philosophy in Leverkusen. We have been defining ourselves by this for a long time. through an aggressive, dominant and technically refined style. And we want to further develop this way of playing with Seoane in the coming years. “

Seoane, who has both Swiss and Spanish nationality, has worked in the past at Grasshoppers, FC Luzern and FC Sion and starts his first coaching job outside Switzerland. “I see this step as a step up to the next level,” says Seoane. “Of course we Swiss always look to the Bundesliga. This is a top European competition and Bayer Leverkusen has been at the top for years. I am really looking forward to this challenge and I am ready to work with a Bundesliga team with so much potential.”
