Vitesse has won a home game against PSV in the Eredivisie for the first time in over 23 years. Thomas Letsch’s team was 2-1 too strong for the visitors on Sunday, where six players were absent due to corona infections and Mario Götze was also not underarm. Until Sunday on February 16, 1997 (1-0), Vitesse had been successful at home against PSV for the last time. The Eindhoven team thus suffered the first league defeat under Roger Schmidt, after the Europa League match with Granada had also been lost last Thursday: 1-2.

After fifty seconds, the first shot was already from Mohamed Ihattaren. The bet went straight into the hands of Remko Pasveer. However, it was not significant for the first half of PSV, which then barely came close to the Arnhem goal. Vitesse took the lead after nine minutes of play. Jacob Rasmussen put his head against the ball after a corner kick from Maximilian Wittek and nodded the leather diagonally behind Yvon Mvogo.

Vitesse and PSV kept each other in balance for the remainder of the first half, although Letsch’s team looked more dangerous. After a nice attack, a shot from the falling Sondre Tronstad ended right in the hands of Mvogo, while Riechedly Bazoer tried from a distance to make it 2-0. PSV could only counter this with a reasonable attempt: just before the break, Ihattaren shot a meter wide.

PSV started strongly in the second half. Pasveer had to go to great lengths to turn a free kick by Philipp Max towards the right intersection, but it was ultimately a precursor to the equalizer. Olivier Boscagli was completely free with a corner kick and nodded the ball in the left corner. The Eindhoven joy was short-lived: the detached Loïs Openda was completely free and tapped in Wittek at the request of again. The VAR looked for offside, but the attacker was narrowly in a rightful position.

With Donyell Malen in the squad for Ryan Thomas, Schmidt tried to bring new impetus, but PSV failed to put an equalizer on the scoreboard. The visitors did not get any further than a good attempt by Max in the corner, followed by a ditto save by Pasveer. Vitesse mainly limited itself to defending, but now and then came out with a counter. In the four minutes extra time, PSV could not avoid a defeat either, as the VAR and ultimately Bas Nijhuis did not see a penalty kick in a crash by Jorrit Hendrix after a duel with Eli Dasa.

Ajax leads the dance in the Eredivisie with fifteen points and stays ahead of Vitesse on goal difference. PSV has two points less as number three and can still be passed by Feyenoord, which plays at RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.
