Maximiliano Romero’s basic debut at PSV has ended in a big disappointment. The attacker started the game against NS Mura in the third heat of the Europa League on Thursday-evening at 7 p.m., but already injured the left knee in the first ten minutes. Trainer Roger Schmidt was forced to replace Romero with Cody Gakpo.

After six and a half minutes, Romero got involved in a duel for the ball in the penalty area of Mura. He then went to the grass, felt his left knee, and was treated by doctors on the field. Schmidt chose to let Mohamed Ihattaren, Noni Madueke and Gakpo warm themselves. Romero seemed to be able to continue for a while, but kept limping and eventually went to the grass to indicate that he needed to be replaced.

Romero’s employment with PSV is still very unfortunate for the time being. He came over from Vélez Sarsfield two and a half years ago for 10.5 million euros, but soon after his arrival suffered a serious thigh injury. In 2019, a knee injury was added to that and now Romero seems to be sidelined for a while again. The Argentinian, who saved PSV against FC Emmen on Saturday with a late goal (2-1), only played three matches in the first of the club.

Romero was loaned to his former club Vélez Sarsfield in the 2019/20 season and in that season he played 22 games in the league, scoring 7 goals. He returned to Eindhoven last summer and his goal against Emmen was his first in the service of PSV. Schmidt’s team took the lead against Mura shortly after the substitution of Romero, thanks to a goal by Donyell Malen on a pass from Philipp Max. Mura came alongside a few minutes later via Nino Kouter.
