The Barcelona women’s team won the Champions League for the first time on Sunday. In the final, Lieke Martens and associates had no trouble with Chelsea, which was completely overrun in the first half: 0-4. It is not only the first Champions League victory for Barcelona, but also the first time that a Spanish club has won the trophy in women’s football. There was no real tension during the final in Gothenburg. Barcelona opened the score after 33 seconds and Martens was at the basis of the goal. Chelsea struggled to defend and Francesca Kirby shot the ball against teammate Melanie Leupolz, who inadvertently passed her own keeper: 0-1.

After fifteen minutes, Barcelona doubled the margin. Again, Leupolz played a negative leading role, this time by committing Jennifer Hermoso in the eyes of the foul, which resulted in a penalty. It was used by Alèxia Putellas, via a low shot in the left corner. Aitana Bonmatí actually decided the game in the twentieth minute, by making it 0-3. The midfielder was reached in the penalty area, with some luck kept her guard away and was clean in the completion.

Martens was at the base of the 0-4 ten minutes before the end. The the Dutch-international sprinted past Niamh Charles on the left, reached the back line and enabled Hansen to score from close range. In the second half, Barcelona took their foot off the accelerator. The Spaniards did not have to make any effort to control Chelsea and made little move themselves to further expand the score. Deep in injury time that seemed to happen, but a goal from Asisat Oshoala was rejected due to offside from declarant Victoria Losada.
