Barcelona is considering breaking Pedri’s contract, Spanish media write on Tuesday. According to the latest reports, the Spanish top club wants to reward the eighteen-year-old midfielder for his stormy development under the care of Ronald Koeman. Pedri quickly became one of the revelations in Spanish football under the Dutchman and the management believes that this should be accompanied by a financial reward.

Pedri made his debut in the first of Barcelona on September 27 last year in the home game against Villarreal (4-0 win). Afterwards, the teenager hardly missed a single game and switched his status as a bench seat for that of basic strength and even Spanish A-international. In total, this football season the counter stands at 54 games in all competitions, in which he scored three goals and six assists.

Pedri’s current contract expires next summer, but Barcelona has a unilateral option to extend the partnership until mid-2024. It is not unlikely that the club management, in addition to a financial upgrade, is also planning to extend the contract for another two seasons, until June 30, 2026. The current agreement includes a transfer clause of four hundred million euros. It is expected to remain unchanged.

Barcelona and Las Palmas reached an agreement in September 2019 on a transfer from Pedri to the Camp Nou, with effect from the summer of 2020. At the time, this involved an amount of five million euros, but the purchase agreement included many variable clauses regarding for example matches in the first team, matches for Spain Under-21 and Spain’s first team. For example, the call of national coach Luis Enrique cost Barcelona a million euros. Barcelona did add a maximum amount of variable clauses: 22 million euros.

Barcelona is working behind the scenes to creatively renew numerous contracts. In October, the club announced that Frenkie de Jong and Clément Lenglet had signed up until mid-2026, Marc-André ter Stegen until the summer of 2025 and Gerard Piqué until mid-2024. The foursome will initially deliver their salary, after which they will receive income in the coming seasons rises again. With the longer contract term, they are compensated for short-term returns.
