Barcelona is according to Marca in the midst of a war with their own players, which is about cutting salaries. The selection of the Spanish superpower sent a registered letter to the board on Sunday, stating that the players do not want to negotiate a salary reduction under Barça’s conditions. Barcelona in turn informed the selection on Monday that it would not budge an inch from its position.

The players want to negotiate a reduction in salaries together with the rest of the club’s staff. Gemma Biosca, Barcelona’s Human Resources Director, sent a letter on behalf of the Spanish top club stating that the players should only appoint one representative to negotiate. The club only wants to negotiate with the footballers, because together they account for ninety percent of the total salaries.

“There is no provision or legal reason to justify discussing these measures, on the basis of economic causes, at different negotiating tables,” the letter, held by Marca. “It would contradict the achievement of a particular goal to determine the club’s viability.” The selection is not planning to negotiate further with the club, which has created a total stalemate.

Incidentally, it was announced on Sunday that not all Barcelona players take the same position. According to RAC1 the letter sent on Sunday is not signed by Marc-André ter Stegen, Clément Lenglet and Frenkie de Jong. They would be willing to think along with the club about salary reduction. Barcelona also introduced a salary reduction at the end of March; then the players reportedly surrendered seventy percent of their wages on the basis of the statutory regulation Temporary Employment Adjustment Plan (ERTE).
