Ajax seems to be losing the battle for Nico González. The Amsterdam club had great interest in the midfielder of Barcelona B, but seems to have to drop out for González. The nineteen-year-old talent is about to sign a new three-year contract in Catalonia, so assures El Mundo Deportivo Wednesday. Manchester City also had high hopes of acquiring the intended successor of Sergio Busquets.
By offering a place in the first selection, Ajax thought it had a serious chance to bring González to Amsterdam. However, the controlling midfielder has decided to commit to Barça longer. He is expected to play for the promises team of the Spanish superpower next season, after which he will have to make the final switch to the A-selection in the 2022/23 season. González is then twenty years old.
González is the son of Francisco Javier González Pérez, Fran for short, former Deportivo La Coruña player and former youth coach at Barcelona, and a product of La Masia. This season, the young midfielder plays his games in Barcelona B, with 22 games to his name so far. ASH wrote earlier that Ronald Koeman is ‘one of the biggest fans’ of González. The Catalans were therefore committed to extending the expiring contract.
Ajax was not the only candidate in the battle for González’s signature. La Voz de Galicia earlier hinted that Pere Guardiola, the brother of Josep Guardiola and agent of González, already had a conversation with the technical managers Mateu Alemany and Ramón Planes. Barcelona then decided to offer the midfielder a three-year contract and to give the guarantee to join the first team next season, at least by training daily. González can then still play his matches in Barcelona B, which plays at the third level in Spain.
