Barcelona coach Quique Setien has been given the sack and the club’s presidential election will now be held in March 2021.
This follows after Barcelona were humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final.

Setien (61) was appointed in January after the team fired Ernesto Valverde, a two-time league winner.

After Barcelona suffered their biggest defeat in European competition on Friday, Setien was sacked after just seven months.

This is Barcelona’s first season in 12 years where he did not win a single trophy.

Barcelona finished second in La Liga, behind Real Madrid, and also dropped out of the Copa del Rey in the quarter-finals after losing to Athletic Bilbao.

“This is the first decision in the restructuring of the first team that the current technical secretary and the new coach, whose name will be announced soon, will have to agree on,” Barcelona said in a statement.

Ronald Koeman, coach of the Netherlands and former player for Barcelona, will possibly take over the reins.

The club’s council decided against holding an immediate election because they also want input from supporters and other stakeholders.

“The board understands that an immediate election is not possible, because the league season starts on September 12, as well as due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s influence on the economy.

“The club will try to reverse the sports and economic situation, based on large-scale changes to the team, as well as a new budget due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This will happen before the end of the current mandate. ”

As with Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna, Barcelona’s president is elected by the club’s members.

Josep Maria Bartomeu won the previous election in 2015 but cannot be re-elected because he has already been elected twice.

He was also elected president in 2014 after Sandro Rosell resigned.

Victor Font is the front runner for the election while Joan Laporta, a former president, also wants to be part of the campaign.
