Memphis Depay can only go to Atlético Madrid by adding water to the wine. Mark reports that Barcelona have pressured the 28-year-old striker to waive the sell-through percentage he is contractually entitled to. As a result, Memphis is missing out on an amount of approximately half a million euros. His transfer to Atlético will be officially announced on Thursday.
According to the Madrid sports newspaper, Memphis’ vote has been decisive in bringing about the transfer. The the Dutch international showed interest from the first moment that he would love to play in the Wanda Metropolitano. Barcelona did not let Memphis leave for Atlético without a fight. The Catalans actually had to transfer no less than fifteen percent of the transfer amount to Memphis, according to his commitment that he made with the club in the summer of 2021.
Barcelona “blackmailed” Memphis to drop the deal, otherwise a move to Atlético would ricochet. According to Mark Memphis will make the switch to the Spanish capital for three million euros excluding bonuses. The Dutchman was therefore entitled to a minimum of 450,000 euros, but prefers playing minutes to the financial interest. Barcelona thus keeps the amount in cash.
Memphis will undergo the medical examination at Atlético on Thursday and will officially sign his contract immediately afterwards. It is possible that Memphis will immediately follow the training, which is scheduled for 6.30 pm at Cerro del Espino, Atlético’s training stadium. Memphis will sign for two and a half seasons, so until mid-2025. At his new club he will compete with, among others, Antoine Griezmann, Álvaro Morata and Ángel Correa.
