Barcelona and Real Madrid have turned against LaLiga’s billion-dollar deal with private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, various Spanish media reported. It was announced on Wednesday that the company had taken a minority stake in the Spanish league for 2.7 billion euros. However, Barcelona and Real Madrid strongly disagree with the content of the deal LaLiga has reached.

ASH reveals that Barcelona has three fundamental problems with the deal between LaLiga and CVC, which is putting €2.7bn into the league in exchange for ten percent of the clubs’ future revenues. The Spanish clubs then have forty years to repay this with a relatively low interest rate. LaLiga wants to use the money to grow globally and become “a global digital entertainment company.” The goal is to close the gap with the Premier League. CVC also previously took an interest in Formula 1, while talks with Serie A came to nothing.

Barcelona thinks the 40-year term is too long. The Catalans point out the unpredictability of the football world. An example cited by Barcelona is the fact that the sale of the Camp Nou sponsorship rights has been under discussion for ten years now. Barcelona also wonders what the clubs will do with the deal. It is feared that mainly LaLiga will benefit from the billions that CVC is transferring. Finally, Barcelona want to dispel the impression that the billion-dollar deal is needed to sign up its new players and pay for Lionel Messi’s contract extension.

At the beginning of July, several Spanish media reported that Barça had far exceeded the salary cap in LaLiga and was therefore not allowed to sign new players. As a result, the club threatened to start the competition without the new signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Eric García and Emerson Royal. Mundo Deportivo reported on Wednesday that Barcelona could sign its new players through the billion-dollar deal between LaLiga and CVC.

Barcelona are not the only club having problems with the LaLiga-CVC deal. El Independiente reports that Real Madrid is investigating the possibilities of going to court. The Royal is skeptical about the terms of the agreement, which have been made known through the media. Like Barcelona, Real Madrid has doubts about the 40-year term and it is currently being investigated whether the deal also harms other interests of the Spanish superpower. If so, Real Madrid will file a lawsuit against LaLiga.
