Valentijn Driessen believes that the Manchester Derby has shown why Daley Blind is currently the first choice of national coach Louis van Gaal at the Dutch. That’s what the journalist of says The Telegraph in the football podcast Kick off. Malacia was already substituted for Manchester United during halftime on Sunday, when the scoreboard showed a 4-0 score.

“We’ve also got rid of that bullshit that Malacia is much better than Blind”, Driessen begins his argument. “You’re not there after one or two games. All that hosanna, I’m glad we got rid of that a bit. That really made no sense at all!” Driessen further indicates that United was also the underlying party during the victory over Arsenal (3-1), but that luck played a role then.

Where Ajax blamed itself against Go Ahead Eagles with a 1-1 draw, Blind can still count on compliments from journalist Mike Verweij. “I have to say that, Daley Blind against Go Ahead Eagles, if only Go Ahead, played excellent. He was one of the few who did reach his level, along with Taylor and Timber. There is a lot of criticism of Blind, but when you see how smart he plays… He also always does well with the Dutch national team.” Driessen does think that Blind can count on the goal against.

Malacia could also count on heavy criticism in the English media after the city derby. The Manchester Evening News rated all players and gave Malacia the lowest point: a 1. The fact that Phil Foden was given all the space and freedom, was heavily blamed on the left back. “If he didn’t have the ball, he was alarmingly distant from Foden and in fact he never really came close to him. This first derby turned out to be terrible for Malacia and he couldn’t do much good either.”
