Teun Koopmeiners seems to be well on his way to Atalanta. Football director Max Huiberts of AZ confirms to Football International that negotiations with the Serie A club are ongoing. At the end of last week Atalanta officially reported in Alkmaar for the first time.

“That does not mean that we have already decided,” emphasizes Huiberts in conversation with the weekly. Various Italian media previously reported that Atalanta has offered a fixed transfer fee of fifteen million euros for the 23-year-old midfielder. Bonuses can be added on top of that. “I will not comment on amounts,” says Huiberts. For the time being, Atalanta is the only club that has specifically reported to AZ for Koopmeiners.

Should the captain actually leave Alkmaar, that does not automatically mean that Huiberts will go to the transfer market in search of a replacement. “We still have Fredrik Midtsjø and we have extended the contracts of Jordy Clasie and Tijjani Reijnders,” he says. “In addition, talented midfielders from our youth academy will participate in the preparation for the A-selection. We have enough good midfielders.”

Koopmeiners was previously linked to AS Roma, but now seems to opt for a move to Bergamo. The midfielder made his debut for AZ in 2017, became captain and now has 43 goals and 17 assists in 150 official games. If the transfer goes through, he will become a teammate of Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon and Sam Lammers.
