A remarkable incident on Sunday afternoon at the second level in Turkey. Aykut Demir was the only player who did not wear a special shirt with the text ‘No to war’ prior to Erzurumspor’s home game against MKE Ankaragücü. The players of both Turkish clubs drew attention to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for several days now. It is not known why Demir, who is captain by the way, has come to this decision.

The words ‘Savasa Hayir No War’ were visible on the specially designed shirts in a white color. However, Demir was simply wearing the Erzurumspor shirt, as can be seen on the right in the photo below. The 33-year-old central defender, who was born in Bergen op Zoom, has been playing for the number four of the second highest division in Turkey since 2019. Erzurumspor eventually lost 0-1 to league-leader MKE Ankaragücü. Demir played for ninety minutes, but could not prevent a defeat.

Demir previously played in Turkey for Genclerbirligi, Trabzonspor and Osmanlispor, among others. In the first years of his career, the experienced defender played for NAC Breda and Excelsior Rotterdam in the Netherlands. In 2013, he came to his only international match in the shirt of Turkey. Demir’s current contract with Erzurumspor runs until June 30, 2022.
